About the 'Staffie'
It is an extremely courageous, obedient and loyal dog. They have a great affection for their friends and it's ability to be calm and quiet when needed and it's trustworthy stability, you could say it's an "all-purpose dog". They are one of the best family dogs and despite what people think, the breeds reputation with children is second to none. They are intelligent, persistent and active and are ideal for agility and competitve obedience.
The breed is naturally muscular and may appear intimidating; however, because of their natural fondness for people, most Staffies are temperamentally ill-suited for guard or attack-dog training.
Staffies have had a terrible press but this is not of their own making - in fact they're wonderful dogs. If people think that Staffies have problems, they're looking at the wrong end of the dog lead! When well cared for and having a confident pack leader, they can make brilliant companions. Our experience suggests that problems occur when bad owners exploit the Staffie's desire to please by training them to show aggression.
Also, in many cases, these ‘people friendly’ dogs, are being overbred by unregistered breeders and then homed to people that either have them for the wrong reasons or have not fully considered the importance of responsible dog ownership.
It has become obvious to many people involved in dog rescue that the majority of the 'death row dogs' are staffies and rescue spaces are hard to find for these unfortunate dogs these days, as most are either already full of staffies or are having to limit the amount they can care for at one time.
