What is microchipping?
Microchipping is the most effective and secure way of permanently identifying a pet.
It is done by injecting a small electronic device (the microchip) under the skin between the dogs' shoulder blades and works through radio wave frequency. It is the size of a grain of rice and causes no more discomfort than a normal vaccination. Once the microchip is inserted, thin layers of body tissue form around the implant and hold it in place.
The microchip is coded with a unique number that can be read by a scanner machine, these are used by vets, local authorities and some animal welfare orgnisations. If the dog has been microchipped then it can be returned to the owner as quickly as possible.
You will receive registration documents once the procedure is done which will show which database in the UK holds your dogs infomation. If you need to make changes, i.e.move house then you can contact the database operator and they will amend your details.
Your vet will be able to microchip your dog for a fee of between £20 and £30 and the Dog's Trust is currently microchipping for FREE.
Local Authorities and animal welfare groups use scanners to check stray dogs to see if they have been microchipped however the reason so many dogs are in the pound is because they have not had this simple, permanent procedure.
